Questions
The things riders actually ask us.
Chain rotation
Can Chain Wax track chains I rotate?
Yes, up to four chains per bike. Chain Wax shows which chain is on the bike and how far each spare went its last time on, and Wax History labels each wax with the chain that went on.
Chain rotation is free, and if you ride one chain, nothing changes.
How do I add a chain?
Open a bike you've already waxed in the app, tap the three-dot button (⋯) in the top right corner, and choose Add Chain. The chain already on the bike becomes Chain A and the new one becomes Chain B.
After that, Add Chain also appears at the bottom of the bike's Chains section. Tap any chain there to rename it, or to remove one that isn't on the bike. Removing chains down to one turns rotation off.
How does Swap Chain work?
On a bike with two or more chains, Swap Chain replaces the Wax Chain button. It shows the chain coming off with its distance since wax and suggests the chain to put on: one that's never been used, otherwise the one that's been off longest. Pick the chain that's already on to record rewaxing it.
The chain going on should be freshly waxed, because its distance since wax starts at 0. A swap counts as a wax: the wax count goes up by one, so does the quick link count if you track it, and Wax History gets an entry with the chain's name. Notifications don't change, so "Time to Wax Your Chain!" is your cue to swap.
I put a chain back on without rewaxing it. Can it keep its distance?
Not directly. Every swap starts the chain at 0. Before you swap, note that chain's "ran" distance in the Chains section. Then swap it on and use Edit Wax Distance in the three-dot menu to enter that number. The wax count still goes up by one.
Why do some Wax History entries have no chain label?
Waxes recorded before you added chains have no label, and a "Before chains were added" line marks where they begin. Waxes recorded by an older version of Chain Wax on another device also show without a label.
Does Chain Wax track total distance per chain?
No. Chain rotation tracks which chain is on the bike and how far each spare went its last time on, and nothing more. It doesn't track a chain's lifetime distance, moving a chain between bikes, or whether a spare has been waxed. To decide when to replace a chain, use a chain wear checker.
Tracking and sync
How often should I rewax my chain?
It depends on conditions: roughly 200 miles for normal road riding, 125 for gravel, 75 in the wet, 500 on the trainer. Those are the presets Chain Wax ships with (the full table is on the home page), and you can set a custom interval from 10 to 1000 miles per bike.
I forgot to record my wax in the app. Can I fix the count?
Yes. Open the bike, choose Edit Wax Distance, and enter how far you've ridden since the actual wax. The counter rebases from there and Strava tracking continues as normal.
I got a new phone or reinstalled. Is my wax history gone?
Not if you're signed into iCloud. Your wax data lives in your private iCloud, so reconnecting the same Strava account restores everything automatically.
Do I need a paid Strava plan?
No. Chain Wax works with a free Strava account.
Why didn't I get a notification after my ride?
Usually one of three things: notifications are off for Chain Wax in iOS Settings, that notification type is turned off in the app under Settings > Notifications, or the ride hasn't finished syncing to Strava yet.
Tips
Does tipping unlock anything?
No. The Support Chain Wax page in Settings offers three optional one-time tips that help cover running costs and new features. Every feature stays free whether or not you tip.
How do I get a refund for a tip?
Apple handles payments and refunds for in-app purchases, so Chain Wax can't issue them. You can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com, and a refunded tip drops out of the "Your tips so far" count. Chain Wax stores nothing about your tips; that count comes from your Apple Account's purchase history.
