Privacy Policy for Chain Wax
Last updated: June 10, 2026
Chain Wax ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy outlines how we collect, use, and safeguard information when you use our mobile application (the "App") and website (the "Site"). By accessing or using Chain Wax, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
Strava Data
- When you connect your Strava account, we access your ride data (such as bike identifiers and mileage) necessary to calculate and track your chain-waxing intervals.
App Preferences
- We store your app settings, including preferred distance units (miles or kilometers), waxing intervals, and ride-condition selections.
Push Notification Data
- If you enable push notifications, we store a device identifier and your wax tracking data on our servers to notify you when your chain needs attention after a ride.
iCloud Sync Data
- If you are signed into iCloud on your device, the App stores a copy of your wax tracking data (per-bike last wax distance and date, wax count, quick link count, ride condition, custom interval, and wax history) in your private iCloud database using Apple's CloudKit. This data lives in your own iCloud account, not on our servers, and is not visible to us or to anyone else.
Usage Data
- We may collect anonymized usage information (for example, screens viewed and feature interactions) to help improve the App's user experience.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Functionality: To calculate "distance since last wax" and track your chain maintenance.
- Push Notifications: To notify you after completing a Strava ride when your chain needs waxing.
- Customization: To remember your preferences and settings.
- Improvement: To analyze anonymous usage trends and fix bugs.
3. Data Storage & Security
- On-Device Storage: Your app preferences and settings are stored locally on your device.
- iCloud Storage: If you are signed into iCloud, your wax tracking data is synced to your private iCloud database so it survives reinstalling the App, moving to a new device, or disconnecting from Strava. If you are not signed into iCloud, the App works in local-only mode with no sync.
- Server Storage: If you enable push notifications, your wax tracking data is also stored on our secure servers to enable notification delivery.
- Secure Transmission: All data is transmitted over secure, encrypted connections.
- No External Sharing: We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties except as required by law.
4. Data Retention
- Strava Data: We fetch updated Strava ride data as needed and do not retain detailed historical data longer than needed for current functionality.
- App Preferences: Your settings and wax history remain on your device until you choose to clear or uninstall the App.
- iCloud Data: Wax data synced to your private iCloud remains there until you delete it. Disconnecting from Strava removes the data from your device and our servers but intentionally leaves your iCloud copy intact, so reconnecting the same Strava account restores it.
- Server Data: If you disable push notifications or disconnect your Strava account, your data is removed from our servers.
5. Sharing & Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with outside parties. We may disclose data if legally required by law enforcement or regulatory authorities.
6. Your Choices
- Disconnect Strava: You can revoke Strava access at any time via the App's settings. This also removes your data from our servers. Your iCloud copy, if any, is kept so your history can be restored if you reconnect.
- Control iCloud Sync: You can turn off iCloud for Chain Wax (or sign out of iCloud) in your device's iCloud settings. Stored iCloud data can be deleted from your device's iCloud storage management settings.
- Disable Push Notifications: You can disable notifications at any time in your device settings.
7. Children's Privacy
Chain Wax is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect data from minors.
8. Updates to This Policy
We may revise this Privacy Policy periodically. We will notify you of significant changes via in-app notification. Continued use of the App after changes indicates acceptance.
